HC LICENCE · NSW
Heavy Combination licence
Move into articulated combinations.

01 / THE VEHICLE
What does this category cover?
Articulated vehicles with three or more axles, or heavy rigid and trailer combinations including an unladen dolly with three or more axles. This class includes a towed trailer over 9 tonnes GVM.
02 / CHECK YOUR ELIGIBILITY
Before you apply
Hold an MR or HR licence, or equivalent, for at least one year.
Time held on a P2 MR or HR licence counts, but you cannot learn to drive or upgrade to HC until you hold an unrestricted MR or HR licence.
- Pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test for the licence class you want.
- Pass an eyesight test.
- Complete HVCBA, or pass a heavy vehicle driving test where HVCBA is unavailable.
GOOD TO KNOW
A clearer starting point.
An HC licence does not authorise you to drive MC vehicles such as B-doubles.
Your own licence history and circumstances determine eligibility. Check the official guidance before paying for training.
03 / THE PATHWAY
Your next steps
- Confirm your current licence class and the required holding period.
- Study the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook and pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test for the class.
- Pass the eyesight test and arrange training and assessment through the appropriate pathway.
- Complete HVCBA with a Registered Training Organisation, or the heavy vehicle driving test where HVCBA is not available.
