MC LICENCE · NSW
Multi Combination licence
The pathway to B-doubles and road trains.

01 / THE VEHICLE
What does this category cover?
B-doubles, prime mover with low loader dolly and low loader trailer combinations, and road trains. MC is the highest heavy vehicle licence class.
02 / CHECK YOUR ELIGIBILITY
Before you apply
Hold an HR or HC licence, or equivalent, for at least one year.
Time held on a P2 HR licence counts, but you cannot learn to drive or upgrade to MC until you hold an unrestricted HR or HC licence. If you hold HR, pass an HC assessment before MC training. A medical assessment is also required. MC must be obtained through HVCBA.
- Pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test for the licence class you want.
- Pass an eyesight test.
- Complete the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) and pass the medical assessment.
GOOD TO KNOW
A clearer starting point.
You cannot take an MC driving test as an alternative to HVCBA.
Your own licence history and circumstances determine eligibility. Check the official guidance before paying for training.
03 / THE PATHWAY
Your next steps
- Confirm your current licence class and the required holding period.
- Study the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook and pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test for the class.
- Pass the eyesight test and arrange training and assessment through the appropriate pathway.
- Complete the HC assessment first if you currently hold HR; then complete MC HVCBA and the required medical assessment.
